Kit Lawrence at High Street Project. 30 August - 17 September, 2005

In this his first solo exhibition in New Zealand, British artist Kit Lawrence presents new paintings and sculpture. Often incorporating layered references to cultural and art historical motifs, Kit’s sculptural work conjures up memories of Arte Povera and early 90’s ‘scatter’ installations. Often incorporating layered references to cultural and art historical motifs Lawrence’s recent painting echoes the grimy industrial hangover and chaotic vibrancy of LS Lowry, Fernand Léger and AR Penck, while the artist’s new surroundings have initiated sculptural work designed to conjure memories of Arte Povera and early 90’s ‘scatter’ installation. The exhibition will also feature a wall painting designed expressly for the opening night bar space.
Kit Lawrence was born in the north west of England in 1977. He attended university in London and has exhibited internationally since 1998. In 2004 he exhibited his first solo painting show, 'Factory Workers', at Riva Gallery in New York. For a full biography and selection of images visit www.lawrenceversions.com
