ASCENDING SCALE : CHRIS COTTRELL, CEILI MURPHY & SUSIE PRATT. 3 - 20 MAY, 2006.

ascending scale concentrates on relationships, cycles and loops to communicate diverse perspectives on contraction and expansion with regards to the development of ecological systems. With this relational awareness we hope to create a field of work which highlights the reciprocal connections between ourselves and the systems we are investigating. The big picture is not the primary concern in the work of Chris Cottrell, instead it is a fascination with seemingly endless variety in the details of the world. For ascending scale individual particles are taken as the basis for developing pattern-fields of image and sound. CĂ©ili Murphy's works are physical manifestations that come from daylight star gazing. Her photographic work attempts fragmented story telling in a way each image is treated like an explanation in an index. Murphy conceptualizes the camera as a capturing device and has manifest this with the creation of a range of bags and purses; literal ‘capturing devices’. What goes around comes around is of interest to Susie Pratt. She has painted mugs, for viewers to drink from, with motivational phrases inspired by the aesthetics of PowerPoint. Alongside the conversations she hopes will arise, with a nice cup of tea in hand and a motivational starting point, are video visual aides. The aides ponder progress and start where they finish in seamless loops.
